Our 25th family reunion took us back to Coburg in Northern Bavaria (ancestral home of the Sand Clan over more than seven centuries; also birthplace of Prince Albert and favourite vacation spot of Queen Victoria, so our British relatives should feel at home), from 11 to 13 October 2013, with more than 50 participants. First prize for the farthest travel distance went to Ted Price from Perth/Australia (on the right in the picture above).
The venue was the Goldene Traube Hotel, Am Viktoriabrunnen 2, D-96450 Coburg, phone (+49 9561) 8760.
Friday, 11 October 2013 - 6 p.m.: get-together at the hotel's Prince Albert Room.
Saturday, 12 October 2013 After breakfast together, - 10 a.m.: starting from the hotel, a guided visit of Coburg by Harald Sandner took us to the houses where the Sands once lived. - 3:30 p.m.: walking tour to Coburg Castle; highlights: the paintings by Georg Balthasar von Sand (XIII.21, 1650-1718) in the Luther Room, and the portraits of Johann Christoph von Sand (XV.25, 1710-1750) and Heinrich Just von Sand (XV.22, 1718-1754) in the armoury. - 7 p.m.: family dinner at the hotel's wine chamber (Franconian buffet), with presentations including an illustrated talk by Mr. Martin Knoch (Coburg Historical and Archaelogical Society, and direct descendant of our one-time feudal lords, von Schaumberg-Knoch) on the fatal bloody feud of 1394-1395 during which our Sante Manor was burnt down and ruined.
